Control your own destiny – that’s been the most important mantra of my career. When you want to control your destiny you need to change along with times, maybe ahead of time. If you don’t change ahead of time, then you lose the “control over your destiny” as market forces will dictate how you change. Innovation plays a pivotal role in control of narrative – control your own destiny. In my mind innovation can be many things – question what you do at work daily, relook at it, try to find out better ways to do the same, look outside, find out problems which you would try to resolve. With this thinking innovation can be all pervasive in what we do on a daily basis. If we want to develop and grow, innovation is non-negotiable. Innovation has also become a very abused or misused management word, only after culture. Organizations which believe in innovation make it part of its DNA and have a process around innovation. Innovation cannot be spurts of energy within an organization which in fact can be counter productive.

Koppillil Radhakrishnan is an Indian space scientist who headed the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) between November 2009 and December 2014 as Chairman of Space Commission, Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of ISRO. Prior to this, he was the Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (2007-2009) and Director of National Remote Sensing Agency (2005-2008) of the Department of Space. He has held several key positions in his career and was one of the key people behind India’s Chandrayaan-1 moon mission. Presently, he is the Chairperson of the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the IIT Council besides being Honorary Distinguished Advisor in the Department of Space/ISRO. He is an accomplished and renownedvocalist (Carnatic Classical music) and a passionate Kathakali artist.
